The West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted land Use (WASCAL) is a large-scale research-focused program designed to help develop effective adaptation and mitigation measures to climate change and increased variability. The program strengthens the research infrastructure and capacity related to climate change in West Africa through collaboration of ten West African countries including Benin, with cooperation of Germany. The GRP Climate Change & Water Resource is one of the components of the program and is implemented at University of Abomey Calavi-Benin. Through the present, the GRP Benin is calling for application for its three-year doctoral training program on climate change and water resources for the academic year 2014-2015. The program provides full scholarship to successful candidates from the WASCAL member countries. Potential candidates are invited to submit an application for selection.

Eligibility

Candidates must: – be citizens of the WASCAL countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo) and Germany; – hold a MSc. Degree in water sciences, Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, climatology, and other relevant disciplines; – demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem solving potentials; – provide a letter of motivation; – be less than 35 years old, and where above provide letter from current employer; – A strong background in math or physic (Bachelor level) is an asset. Non-Anglophone candidates must have an internationally recognized Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. Selected candidates with no sufficient English proficiency will undergo a three month intensive English coursework.

Selection procedure

The selection of candidates will be conducted by the selection committees in two steps. A pre-selection by the committee based on submitted documents. Five highly ranked candidates from each participating country will be shortlisted based on the above criteria. The pre-selected applications will be examined by the Advisory Board of the GRP Climate Change and Water Resource Benin. Two of them will be interviewed to finally select one per country to benefit the scholarships.
